Kris Elftmann
Kris Elftmann
Chair, UCI Foundation Board Stewardship Committee

The Stewardship Stars program recognizes individual and team efforts that are especially effective in nurturing all-important relationships with donors.

Award Winners

The UCI Foundation Stewardship Committee has selected the following three individuals for special recognition during the past academic quarter for their outstanding practice of stewardship.

Spring 2008
Professor Robert Cohen
Claire Trevor School of the Arts

Pam Miller
Assoc. Dean of Development
Henry i School of Engineering

Winter 2008
Nick Alexopoulos
Dean, Henry Samueli School of Engineering

Janice Briggs
Senior Director of Development, Health Sciences Advancement

Michael Hooker
Professor, Arts - Drama

Professor Robert Cohen
If anyone could serve as the poster child for stewardship at UC Irvine, it has to be Professor Robert Cohen.

As the founding professor for Drama more than 40 years ago, the Claire Trevor Professor has maintained contact with virtually all of his former students, which has yielded significant dividends for the School.

Professor Cohen doesn't toot his horn in this regard--his former students toot it for him! Revered among our Drama alumni, they have demonstrated their allegiance to the former Yale standout by leading campaign efforts for the School and are well represented on the CTSA Dean's Leadership Council. This is a reflection of Professor Cohen's lifelong commitment to educational and professional excellence.

We are very fortunate to have Professor Cohen in our midst!

Pam Miller
I would like to recommend Pam Miller for a Stewardship Star. The Henry Samueli School of Engineering's successful Beall Event to honor Donald and Joan Beall for their tremendous support of the University was spectacular. Great Job of stewarding a very important donor!!!

Dean Nick Alexopoulos
Dean Nick Alexopoulos has been nominated in recognition of his work stewarding Henry Samueli. In particular, Tom was pleased to hear of the recent event that Dean Alexopoulos organized for Dr. Samueli to personally meet with the Samueli School of Engineering students who are beneficiaries of the Samuelis' generosity.

Janice Briggs
My wife and I don’t see Janice as often as we’d like throughout the year but it certainly not for her lack of trying. She frequently calls to be sure we were invited to various university events, and to those she knows we’ve been invited to, she calls or sends a note to remind us of the event. And when we do find that we are attending events together, Janice invariably finds us and makes us feel like we’re the most important people in the room.

Janice also never fails to send a card acknowledging various holidays throughout the year; her notes are, in every case, highly personalized and extremely warm. There is little doubt that she cares about us as both friends and donors. We firmly believe that it is the little things that build relationships. Janice obviously agrees and thus she has master the art of doing the little things in the most caring and gracious way.

Michael Hooker
Michael is the Director of the Sound Design program in the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, and has been a key player in stewarding donors who have given expensive equipment to the Sound Design program. Michael recently took time out of a very busy schedule with teaching classes and performances to visit a donor in Berkeley California to give an update on how the donor's equipment has been used. The donor was very impressed! It is the high caliber of faculty like Michael that takes stewardship to the next level of excellence. He is always happy to meet with possible donors or existing donors to provide information on the Sound Design Program and the level of excellence that the Drama Department provides for every show.

Prior to UCI, Michael spent 6 years as Senior Media Designer for Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) where he produced sound and music for Disney theme parks worldwide. He was area lead media designer for Adventureland at Hong Kong Disneyland and Mermaid Lagoon at Tokyo Disney Sea. He has won two Themed Entertainment Association (Thea) awards for design work on Tokyo Disney Sea and Cinemagique. We are extremely lucky to have lured him from Walt Disney Imagineering.

About The Program

"Stewardship is an organization’s philosophical commitment to the value and importance of donors as well as their gifts; a belief, an attitude, that each donor – whether individual, corporate or foundation – contributes more than money, and that gifts are a symbol of the donor’s belief in the values, purpose and importance of the organization."
- Kay Sprinkel Grace, Over Goal!

The Stewardship Stars program will recognize individual and team efforts that are especially effective in nurturing all-important relationships with donors.

The University of California, Irvine is committed to being the leader in donor stewardship as stewardship is the foundation for building lasting relationships between the university and those who become its most passionate long-term advocates.

University of California, Irvine Foundation leaders are convinced that effective stewardship is critical to the future philanthropic success of the organization.

The Foundation is implementing the Stewardship Stars program to encourage and reward enhanced stewardship practices across the campus; the best stewardship is a global/institutional responsibility that is the most effective when practiced by every member of the university community.

Stewardship is not a one-size-fits-all model. Successful stewardship is tailored to the nature of the gift and to the needs, wishes and preferences of the donor whether the donor is an individual, family foundation or corporation.

Stewardship is the process of acknowledging and managing gifts in a consistent, timely and appropriate manner – and in a way that responds to the donor’s wishes and expectations. Good stewardship also provides an opportunity for ongoing communication and relations with donors to demonstrate the use and impact of their gifts.

Many of the most effective stewardship practices as small, inexpensive, and extremely thoughtful. But in every case, appropriateness, timeliness, accuracy and creativity remain at the heart of effective stewardship.
